Source webinar: Cockroaches, Dr. Dan Suiter, November 10, 2021
Series: Structural Pest Control
Duration: 54:51
CEU Categories: [PENDING: awaiting team confirmation]
Exercises: 3 (8 pairs each, 2 distractors each)

Scope note. Every term, description and distractor comes from this recording. Each Column B list carries two extra items that Suiter did in fact describe, but that match none of the items in Column A, so students cannot work the exercise by elimination.

Exercises

Matching Exercise 1: Cockroach Species and Life Stages

Timestamp Reference: 8:50 – 41:36 (primary coverage area)
Type: Species ID

Instructions: Match each item in Column A with the correct description in Column B. Two items in Column B do not match anything in Column A.

#Column AColumn B

Matching Exercise 2: Products, Active Ingredients, and Uses

Timestamp Reference: 17:54 – 46:05 (primary coverage area)
Type: Product-Ingredient

Instructions: Match each item in Column A with the correct description in Column B. Two items in Column B do not match anything in Column A.

#Column AColumn B
1Killmastera) Granular scatter baits Suiter named for the large roaches
2Allopurinolb) Poured onto white bread as the attractant in the paint can trap
3Oxypurinolc) A Dursban paint, white and almost a paste, brushed around the inside edge of a manhole cover
4Indoxacarbd) A human gout drug fed to cockroaches; the University of Florida patented the use
5Niban and Advion IGe) Sold as a blue paste applied with a knife, and eaten readily by the large roaches
6Pyrethroid microcapf) Still active inside the dead cockroach, which turns the body into a fire ant bait
7Advion gelg) Mixed one to one and used to coat the inside lip of a paint can
8Mineral oil and Vaselineh) The active ingredient in a commercialized bait that worked at growth regulator speed
i) Put out in a local park trial before the label came through; roaches fed on it that night
j) Works on a wall or a tree hole, and kills the egg case parasitoids along with the roaches

Answer Key:
1 → c, 2 → d, 3 → h, 4 → f, 5 → a, 6 → j, 7 → i, 8 → g

Distractors: b) is the cheap beer used in the trap (43:07 – 43:21). e) is the boric acid paste bait Suiter recalled from the era of tub formulations (38:46 – 38:58); he named two products on air and neither name is reproduced here, since the audio is unresolved. Neither item matches a Column A entry.

Matching Exercise 3: Terminology and Biology

Timestamp Reference: 14:55 – 53:59 (primary coverage area)
